The Big Picture

Every month I sit down and send out an email. I go back through my pictures and the calendar on my phone and try to remember what happened in the last month.

I do this because there is a group of people who believe in what I am doing and are supporting me financially and through prayer. I want to inform them of what has been happening.

But I have unknowingly stumbled upon something very powerful.

Direction.

Purpose.

Story.

Meaning.

I still wake up sometimes and wonder what I am doing with my life. I still scratch my head sometimes and wonder if any of this is making a difference at all. But at least with this monthly rhythm of recapping my life in photos and pictures, I am tying yarn between the pieces. I am connecting myself with my past and visioncasting my future.

Honestly, I don’t think you should have to be in full time ministry to send an update of your life. People do this on social media all the time without realizing it. The main difference is that our status updates are so disconnected. Facebook wants to know how we are doing today. Snapchat let’s people know how we are right now.

I am part of a generation that has a hard time taking a step back and seeing the bigger painting.

Where is my life headed? Or on an even greater level, where does my life fit in the even bigger picture of my geographical upbringing, my ethnic heritage, my socioeconomic class, the age in which I live?

The mantra of this age is so myopic that most people are left wondering if there is any purpose left in life at all.  Well, there is.

Jesus said “if you try to hang onto your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake and the gospel’s sake will save it”

The Son of God is alive and very active in the world today. His story is so much grander than mine and he has invited me to be a part of it.

The best decision you can make in life is to let go of the short-sited small dreams and be lost in the wider epic. It feels like death sometimes but it ends up being life.

Jesus is looking for people who will let go of everything they are and have and let their lives be used for something greater.

Maybe God is stirring something in your heart today. You don’t have to move to another country to live completely sold out for Jesus. If you are reading this today and you want to change please send me a message and let’s talk. I want to point you to some resources that will make you hunger deeper for God.

But a great way to start might be to start documenting your life. Live with a memory of where you have been and where you are going. Ask God how your story fits into the bigger one.
